The ASTER Volcano Archive (AVA)

This website provides access to a substantial part of the ASTER Volcano Archive (AVA) image data acquired over the life of the ASTER mission. Our archive is currently comprised of over 40,000 full resolution ASTER Very Near Infrared (VNIR) daytime volcano images, representing about a third of the ASTER volcano holdings, for 1542 active volcanoes listed in the Smithsonian Global Volcano Catalog. They are provided as downloadble JPEG images at full 15m/pixel resolution with accompanying JPEG World File (*.jpgw) information. Over the next one to two months we will be progressively adding the balance of existing daytime ASTER VNIR volcano data acquisitions, as well as newly acquired image granules.

Using the AVA Browser:

The AVA Browser utilizes the powerful Google Maps geographic information system interface. Its use is intuitive; however, for first time Google Maps users, here are the steps to access volcanoes within the data base.

  1. Open AVA to access Google Maps. You will be presented with a global Mercator projection world map.
  2. With your mouse, right click on the “+” icon in the slider tool located at the upper left of the screen, or move the slider itself by right-clicking, holding, and rolling. As magnification increases, right-click, hold, and roll the cursor to bring your area of interest to the center of the screen.
  3. Volcano icons will appear. As you roll the cursor over the volcano icon, the name of the volcano will appear at the lower left of the screen.
  4. Right-click on a volcano icon of interest. A bubble with a HTML-liked volcano name will appear. Right-click on the HTML link and a library of frames available within the AVA will present itself. Right click on either the image thumbnail or one of the other hyper-linked products for display. Image thumbnails are shown in order of ascending date.
  5. Notes:
    1. The AVA Browser interface is currently under continuing development, so look for both tool improvements and increasing data volume.
    2. Please report bugs, comments, or suggestions to  Howard.L.Tan@jpl.nasa.gov or dave.pieri@jpl.nasa.gov
    3. Interested scientific users, with NASA authorization for ASTER data use, may contact us to arrange access to the full ASTER *.HDF volcano archive and the ASTER Volcano Data Acquisition and Analysis System (VDAAS).
